OSCAR HIGHLIGHTS: “Green Book” Won Best Picture, and the No-Host Thing Worked Just Fine
“Green Book” won Best Picture at the Oscars last night, while RAMI MALEK won Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and OLIVIA COLMAN won Best Actress for “The Favourite”.
ALFONSO CUARON won Best Director for “Roma”.
And LADY GAGA and SPIKE LEE both picked up their first Oscars.
Spike won for Best Adapted Screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman”, although he was also up for Best Director. And Gaga won Best Original Song for “Shallow” from “A Star is Born”. She was also nominated for Best Actress.
The whole no-host thing worked out pretty well. They just had an off-screen announcer who kept things moving at a decent clip.
The show started off with QUEEN and ADAM LAMBERT doing a shortened version of “We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions” that had the crowd on its feet.
Then TINA FEY, AMY POEHLER, and MAYA RUDOLPH came out and did a mini-monologue consisting of jokes they WOULD HAVE told IF they were hosting.
But easily the most buzz-worthy moment of the night came during the presentation of the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. No, I’m serious. Three people who worked on “Vice” won the award, and they basically had NO IDEA how to deliver a speech. It was honestly one of the most awkward moments in Oscar history.
In a far less awkward moment, SAMUEL L. JACKSON got to announce Spike Lee’s first Oscar win . . . and he kind of lost his mind over it. (Sam also went off-script to let Spike know that the Knicks won for a change.)
Speaking of the losing of one’s mind, Lady Gaga had a near-mental breakdown when she won. How come every time this woman wins an award she acts like someone just shot her dog?
On a related note, her performance of “Shallow” with BRADLEY COOPER has convinced the Internet that they’re hooking up . . . even though Bradley’s girlfriend IRINA SHAYK was there, and seemed to be loving it.
