Successful Movies That Opened the Same Weekend

Fear not, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”: Box office history has proven there’s still a chance two movies can open on the same weekend and both be successful.
Here are a few examples:
1. “Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Shining”, May 21st and 23rd, 1980
2. “Poltergeist” and “Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan”, June 4th, 1982
3. “Blade Runner” and “The Thing”, June 25th, 1982
(Actually, both of these movies BOMBED at the time, even though they’re considered classics now. “E.T.” was still dominating the box office when they hit.)
4. “Ghostbusters” and “Gremlins”, June 8th, 1984
5. “Batman” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”, June 23rd, 1989
6. “The Matrix” and “10 Things I Hate about You”, March 31st, 1999
7. “The Dark Knight” and “Mamma Mia!”, July 18th, 2008
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” hit theaters next Friday.
